So...
I'm going to keep this informal, because that's the kind of person I
am, really. Whether I'm writing, editing or publishing, I just do
what I do!
I'm
Debbie McGowan, and if you're a regular reader of Bike Book Reviews,
then you might recall seeing my name before.
I'm the author of the Hiding Behind The Couch series (including
Crying in
the Rain)
and the Checking Him Out series. Most recently, I co-authored Leaving
Flowers
with the wonderful Raine O'Tierney.
As
well as being an author, I run Beaten Track Publishing, a fairly
small, UK-based, indie publisher. What do we publish? Well, it's hard
to define, because we'll publish anything that we think is of merit,
which includes novels (romance and relationships, crime/thrillers,
children's and young adults' stories), anthologies and memoirs.
We
publish a lot of diverse fiction, by diverse authors, and today I'm
going to focus on the LGBTQ books and authors. Beaten Track authors
are prolific, and some publish books elsewhere too, so check out
their author pages for links to their websites and blogs.
Before
I get to the EPIC list of books these awesome authors have written
(and there are LOADS!), I’m going to dish the dirt. Don’t get too
excited – I’m their editor/publisher, so it’s all about the
words, words, words.
First
there are those who are punctuation illiterate… yes, Al and Claire,
I am looking at you. I think Al’s got a bag of commas and dashes
next to his keyboard and he just sprinkles it over the manuscript
before he sends it in.
Then there are the punctuation precious… Larry Benjamin, anyone?
“I’m
taking out this comma, Larry.”
“What!?!?!?!?
No!!!!” <- No exaggeration; this is his response.

then there is
Laura…Susan…Johnson…ellipsing…her…way…through…the…pages…
Ofelia
Gränd is…actually pretty good with punctuation, but she’s bossy.
Super bossy. And very organised. It’s marvellous!
Then,
Jonathan Penn, king of the parenthetical element. One day I’m going
to grab him by the dangling modifiers, and— he’s a great
proofreader, beta-reader, editor, but honestly, JP, just fix the
thing. No explanation needed.

M Hirschi. Your Majesty. Long live…well none of his secondary
characters. He is a literary serial killer. Seriously, reading a
Hirschi story is like when you spot the red-shirt guy in Star Trek.
Raine
O’Tierney!!!! <- these are
compulsory. My goodness, can this woman write, like really
fast and it’s all AMAZING, and she’s pushy, pushy…
“No
pressure, Debs. Write the next bit when you’re ready…is it done
yet? How about now?”
Lucky
we both write like the words will run out if we don’t.
I
could keep going, but it would be the longest blog post in the world,
so I’ll just say I am SO lucky to work with these awesome people,
and it is truly a privilege to be trusted with guardianship of their
words and their worlds.
