When New York-based memoirist Aaron Wilkinson gathers with his high school friends to marry off two of their own, he is forced to spend a week with Nik, the boy who broke his heart.

As they settle into the Texas beach house where the nuptials will be performed, Nik quickly makes his intentions clear: he wants Aaron back. "He's coming hard, baby," a friend warns, setting the tone for a week of transition where Aaron and Nik must decide if they are playing for keeps.

Pages or Words: 256 pages

Categories:  Contemporary, Gay fiction, M/M Romance, New Adult, Romance

SOUNDS GREAT RIGHT? WAIT TILL YOU READ THE EXCERPT:

Excerpt:
Aaron finishes the song and Stephanie snatches the mic out of his hand, crooks her finger at Nik and launches them into a reprise of their performance of "Dancing on My Own" from the homecoming weekend they all spent here at the house back in senior year. Stephanie still has questionable rhythm and tragic pitch—she loves to sing, which is why they have a karaoke machine in this house, but it's one thing she will admit she doesn't have much of a gift for—but there's a reason Nik majored in music at The University of Texas, and his voice has come a long way.
Somehow, this deliberate throwback to a memory that was never anything but happy seems different than what Aaron has just done. He sits on the sofa, flanked by Alex and Jasmine, hating them both a little for participating in it even while he smiles. Nik dances—how can you not, with this song—but he still watches Aaron, gives him a little head-tilt during the chorus, and it's charming and devastating and infuriating.
Jasmine leans to murmur, "Oh, I see how it is."
"Oh, shut up."

"You might not be desperate, but I'm not sure about him. He's coming hard, baby."

HOW ABOUT AN AUTHOR Q & A? THIS IS A FUN ONE!
Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Mila McWarren, author of The Luckiest.

Hi Mila, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Hi, I'm Mila. I'm a married woman in her 40s, 2 kids, living on the East Coast of the US. This is my first book, and my first book tour! Exciting/terrifying!

Bec- Haha I bet it is, but I bet exciting tips the scales a little right? ;p here are the questions:
  1. Why do you write?

I… honestly have no idea? Stories are fun. I like reading them, and if I'm not getting what I want, sometimes I have to make my own fun. When writing is going well, it's the most fun you can have for free. And even when it's like pulling teeth to put words on the page, there is always glorious research to be done, and that's probably the MOST fun part. (see #4)

Bec- That is a great point about making your own fun, I love that! I would love the research too!
  1. Was this book difficult to write?

Look, a thing I wanted to do with this book was to tell a slow-burn of a story. I didn't want there to be external impediments; I didn't want there to be a will-they-won't-they feeling to it. I wanted it to be one long, glorious slide into happy. I think a lot of us are looking for relationships that just WORK, that don't require a plot twist in the third act, that you don't have to work for because they just FIT, so easily, like they're just what they're looking for. It's not something that I read enough of in romance. And the reason for that is because that is HARD to write. That is hard to do in a way that is interesting, and that makes you want to keep reading.

Next time, I'm going to write something with way more structural impediments. There's going to be a love triangle and a bad guy and some truly implausible turns of plot. Because this was a bitch.

Lol, I bet it was, and I love that idea, can't wait to read the next one!
  1. Give us an insight into Aaron, what does he do that is so special?

Aaron is ballsy as hell, he really is. He's like 22 and he's decided to be a memorist; who has that much confidence in himself at that age? Aaron, that's who. He's the most selfish, giving person – he gives a lot to people in this story, the whole story is about what he can do for his friends, but he always does so with one eye on himself. Which I think is probably really healthy, but mostly he's doing it because he can't NOT. That makes him sound unlikeable, but I don't think he is. I, at least, really admire this kid's chutzpah. He feels so deeply and he takes his own feelings pretty seriously.

Bec- I am super excited to read this now, I love characters like this! Can't wait!
  1. How much research do you do for your books?

WAY too much; way more than ever ends up on the page, anyway. I have pages and pages of notes on the Indian and Vietnamese communities in Houston; I have a ton of stuff on Juneteenth celebrations in Galveston; I have a pile of photos and reviews of places scattered around the location of this book. I know where the nearest shopping is to the house, and last year I visited the neighborhood where the house that Stephanie's parents' beach house is modeled after. I've also visited all of the schools that Nik and Aaron went to. Almost NONE of this is in the book, because nobody but me cares, but I do a LOT of research – I need to feel like I'm living in the real world of them.

Bec- That is AWESOME, you can really tell when the book is really well researched, and that makes the story so much more compelling!
  1. Who designs your covers?

Thanks for noticing how gorgeous this cover is! That's all on the publisher, Interlude Press. They are not messing around when it comes to cover design, have you noticed? I'm so proud to be working with them; their commitment to their authors' best chance of success is profound, and that includes a real investment in the covers and in marketing. I also have to say: I know CB, the artist who did my cover, a little. She's an absolute delight and one hell of a talent, and when the folks at IP told me she had done my cover (it was a surprise!) I thought I was going to die of happiness. It's its own kind of pressure; I really want the book to be as gorgeous as the packaging!

Bec- It is a great cover indeed, and I love it when a publishing company takes care of their authors, a happy author means happy readers :), thanks for joining me Mila, this was a ton of fun!

This was fun, thanks for having me!
