A BIT ABOUT BEATEN TRACK:

Beaten Track is an independent publisher of diverse fiction and non-fiction. We operate on socialist principles and believe in equality, absolutely.
We are not affiliated to any of the large publishing houses.
All our authors retain full rights and royalties (usually 50% of net profit).
We are NOT a vanity publisher. We also provide, via InRoad Publishing, services to independent authors to assist with the self-publishing process.

PublicationsPublications listed on our site are predominantly published by us on behalf of independent authors, although we may also list publications from other likeminded publishers, respected fellow authors and authors' consortia.

Beaten Track Publishing is a participant in both the Amazon EU Associates Programme and Amazon USA Associates Programme, an affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com respectively.

Why Beaten Track? The first interpretation of this question leads to an explanation for the choice of name. Quite simply, we've all traversed the beaten track of authorship until our shoes are worn and our legs ache. Independent publishing is freedom from that treadmill and from the control exerted by traditional publishers. That said, we owe it to ourselves to ensure the work we 'put out there' is the very best it can be. This is where Beaten Track can help.

To take the question the other way, why not? If we publish your work, you keep all of your rights. There are no tie-ins for sequels, nor options on things that sound great but may never happen. Whether you're published by us or using our paid-for pre-publication services, you can be confident you and your work will be cared for and treated with respect.

Who / What is Beaten Track Publishing? The company is owned and managed by Debbie McGowan, an independent author by choice, who has experienced both success and rejection at the hands of publishers. In all cases, her hard work didn't pay off financially, and she believes strongly that none of us should surrender our creative freedom in order to attain a publishing deal.

Debbie McGowan is an award-winning author of contemporary fiction that celebrates life, love and relationships in all their diversity. Since the publication in 2004 of her debut novel, Champagne - based on a stage show co-written and co-produced with her husband - she has published a further thirty-five works (twenty novels, fifteen short stories and novellas). She is the author of two ongoing series: Hiding Behind The Couch (a literary 'soap opera' centring on the lives of nine long-term friends) and Checking Him Out (LGBTQ romance). Debbie has been a finalist in both the Rainbow Awards and the Bisexual Book Awards, and in 2016, she won the Lambda Literary Award (Lammy) for her novel, When Skies Have Fallen: a British historical romance spanning twenty-three years, from the end of WWII to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967. Through her independent publishing company, Debbie gives voice to other authors whose work would be deemed unprofitable by mainstream publishing houses.

NOW FOR MY SURPRISE! TWO OF THE BEATEN TRACK AUTHORS SAID A FEW WORDS ABOUT DEB: LET'S SEE WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY!                                    LARRY BENJAMIN: I first met Deb just after the publication of my first book, What Binds Us, in 2011. I joined the Beaten Track family in 2013 when Deb agreed to publish my third book. Her faith in my talent, her guidance, her expertise in all things publishing has been invaluable.                                                                                                                                                                  HANS HIRSCHI: "Can you write a few sentences about Deb, please? Easier requests for writing I’ve seen…                                                                                                                                        How does one describe the “boss lady”, my publisher, editor, and friend, in a “few sentences”? I could try to start out with a few words that come to mind: fierce, stubborn, workaholic, insanely talented, caring, devoted, socialist… Debbie isn’t easily described. I remember our first interaction online, a shy request to translate something to Swedish for her, for one of her characters from her Hiding Behind the Couch saga. Not sure how she’d found me on Twitter and why she’d approached me, but yeah. After that, things happened quickly. We talked and talked, I translated a couple of sentences into Norwegian with a friend from beyond the border and then we were suddenly on course for a meeting in London.                                                                                                             We found each other that day, or rather the night before, drinking away at my hotel and eating horrible food at a Jamie Oliver restaurant nearby. Remember that, Deb? That was 2014, very early on. Less than a year later, after she’d edited my fourth novel and slapped a label on me that I’m still carrying proudly, I began to publish with Beaten Track, and we’ve never looked back since.                I trust Debbie with my (artistic) life, and I know it’s in good hands, as she preserves my artistic integrity, allows me to go where my muse takes me, from Sci-Fi, Erotica, short stories or contemporary writing. No questions asked. Her editing is always gentle to the artist’s fragile soul, preserving my voice, but spot on, accurate and to the point. And like a mentor, she’s always there to answer questions, help us with marketing or other publishing/writing related queries.                       We don’t talk very often. Debbie’s super busy and I try to stay clear as much as I can. Give her space to work on her own writing, her own amazing talent. But when we do talk, a few times every year, it’s usually for a couple of hours or more. It’s like two twin souls joining for tea and crumpets, sitting in front of a fireplace in comfy PJs. Those days are usually the best.                                       Next spring, the Beaten Track family plans a get-together near her home in Burscough. I can’t wait to meet the rest of her rag-tag band of authors, and seeing all the other amazing talent she’s gathered around her fireplace. I picture lots of tea and plenty of crumpets being needed… Thank you, Debbie, for everything you do for us, fully aware that words, even from a seasoned author, can never do you justice."                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          OK THAT MAY HAVE MADE ME TEAR UP A BIT! DEBBIE DESERVES ALL OF THAT PRAISE AND MORE! SO THANK YOU DEBBIE, FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, FOR BEING AN AMAZING AUTHOR, DEVOTED PUBLISHER, GENTLE EDITOR, AND MOST OF ALL AMAZING FRIEND! I LOVE YOU AND I LOVE THAT YOU ARE ALWAYS WILLING TO BE MY GUINEA PIG! BY THE WAY......:p
THANKS FOR JOINING ME FOR DAY 6 OF BEATEN TRACK WEEK, DEB WILL FORGIVE ME EVENTUALLY :p SEE YOU GUYS TOMORROW FOR THE WRAP UP POST!
